About Dr. Rahim

It was a Thursday. The local village market at Nazirpur, Mymensingh was humming with activity. Tucked in a corner, a mass of people, old and young, rich and poor, gathered to watch him. The ancient man with wild tousled hair stared intently at the old crumpled paper. The once breathless crowd around him made a united whoop of surprise as it burst into flames. His face wrinkled to form a smile of triumph. Rahim, then barely 10 years old, watched in open mouthed wonder. How did he do that? What secret magical power did this man possess? This was the life altering question Rahim asked which initiated a journey of discovering the secrets of magic, the delicate fragility and the awesome power of the human mind.

To Rahim, magic was an obsession. He asked everyone, read anything and tried everything to master the art of magic. Growing up, his early teachers included a farmer from the enchanting land of Assam, India and his science teacher who was the school headmaster. He built many of his own apparatuses and bought some as well and landed his very first show in his own college, Dhaka College.

Later, in his pursuit to study medicine, he joined the prestigious Dhaka Medical College and it is there that he had the opportunity to hone his skills. He regularly met and discussed magic with many talented magicians like Mainul Khan, Magician Alam and a British magician who used to work at the British embassy. He also had the chance to stay with and talk to Chittagong professor Aladdin who was the author of many magic books. It was Aladdin who inspired him to become a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM). He was also a member of the Indian Magic Circle led by P.C. Sharkar Junior and other world renowned international magic circles. His expertise in magic and his thrilling performances were well known in his community and in his first year, he had his first TV appearance for a children’s show. In his second year, the devastating 1971 war shook Bangladesh and displaced its citizens. Bangladesh, victorious after the war, was a fresh new country, its citizens intent on picking up the pieces to build a better future. The period 1972-1974 saw many even larger variety shows, with Rahim performing alongside many top performers of the time.

After graduating and completing his internship, he made his way to the sunny city of Abu Dhabi where he worked as a doctor for the Ministry of Health. He continued acquiring and learning new magic tricks and even managed to travel to the famous Supreme magic store in London to pick out items personally. Soon he got married to the lovely Shahida Khatoon and had three children. In the 90s the Internet made its way out of the labs and into the hands of regular consumers thus enabling Rahim to purchase an even wider range of items from all over the world adding to his already vast collection.

During his time in Abu Dhabi, he met many magicians including Abu Bakr who helped him land many shows. He started performing at many events from very small birthday parties to very large corporate events at a variety of places like the Sheraton, Hilton, Intercontinental etc. Not only did he entertain expat clients but also a number of prominent local families such as the Ruler’s grandchildren at Al Bahar Palace.

Although he lived in Abu Dhabi, he still had his roots firmly in Bangladesh. He kept regular contact with many famous magicians who were also his close friends such as Jewel Aich, Mainul Khan, George D’ Cruze and finally Ulfat Kabir who provided splendid company and significant support whenever he visited Bangladesh.

Rahim is now entering an exciting chapter in his life. He is in the process of settling in his beloved homeland and focusing on magic full-time. His winning personality, massive collection of magic items and his tremendous talent and expertise in performing close-up, parlour and stage magic tricks will surely not go unnoticed.
